Book Covers - Illustration & Layout Design
Art Nouveau style paired with Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. I chose Art Nouveau because I thought it would be challenging (this was for an Illustrator II class) and because I thought using a colonizer's artistic style to represent the novel of Nigerian writer discussing colonizers would create tension. The cover depicts a locust, which represents white colonizers and, the back depicts the effect of the locust coming (plants dying / cultures dying). I wanted the covers to be symbolic because of the symbolism Achebe uses in his book.
Sachplakat design style paired with James Joyce's Ulysses. I chose this style because I thought it easily represented the way in which figures are obscured in Joyce's novel. The idea behind the front, spine, and back covers is that each one has its own perspective, and yet the three lantern light post links all together. The three lanterns represent the three primary characters, and the bridge is a famous bridge in Dublin, where the book takes place.
London Underground design style paired with One Thousand and One Nights. I chose London Underground because I thought this style would best represent the children's stories (as they are considered in their homelands). I did a stylized sun on the cover representing the stories within, and the moon on the back representing the frame tale. The two are connected, as the stories are connected with each other, and through time.
